November 4, 2025Marcus Miller – one of the most acclaimed contemporary jazz bassists, composers, and producers. Known for his distinctive electric bass sound that blends funk, soul, jazz, and groove, Miller has become an icon in both jazz and popular music.
From a young age, he mastered the clarinet, saxophone, piano, and guitar, but the bass became his primary instrument. As a sought-after session musician in New York, he collaborated with legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Grover Washington Jr., Bob James, and David Sanborn.
As a bandleader and producer, Miller worked closely with Miles Davis on albums including Tutu, Music from Siesta, and Amandla. He also collaborated with Luther Vandross, contributing to 13 platinum albums. His solo discography includes notable releases like The Sun Don’t Lie, Tales, M2 (Grammy winner, 2001), and Afrodeezia, inspired by UNESCO’s Slave Route Project.
In 2013, Miller was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace, and in 2021 he received the Bass Player magazine Lifetime Achievement Award.
